New to Pilates or Mobility Stretch? What to Expect at Your First Class in Columbia, MD

Starting a new class — or coming back after a break — is exciting. It can also feel a little intimidating. Here's everything you need to know so you can walk in feeling confident.

What to Wear and Bring:

  • Comfy, move-friendly clothes that won't play peek-a-boo during the ab-five or donkey kicks

  • Bare feet (or traction socks if you prefer)

  • Water bottle. We have a fountain to refill.

  • Your own mat and props if you choose, or use ours – we've got sanitizing wipes for after each use

Pro Tip: Eat a light snack a couple hours before class.

Setting Up: Feeling lost? No worries! Our awesome desk staff or I will help you find the perfect spot for your mat. We want you to feel confident and comfortable.

The Basics on Classes at the Yoga Center of Columbia:

  • 100+ classes weekly on the full schedule. I teach 10 classes per week.

  • All my classes have in-studio and online options. YOU have total schedule flexibility.

  • Props needed for home practice:

    • Pilates 1: Mat, strap, blanket

    • Pilates 1-2 with Weights through Pilates 2-3 with Weights: Mat, strap, blanket plus resistance props listed on my Pilates page.

    • Mobility Stretch: Mat, strap, blanket, plus about your arms’ width of wall space, and sometimes a chair

    • Meditation: Just your awesome self and a comfy seat (this is a free class every Wednesday morning!)

Our Motto: All Abilities, All Bodies, All Ages. From 17 to 87, I have students enjoying it at every age and stage in our adult classes, including pregnancy.

New Student Special: 3 weeks of unlimited classes for $59. Try between 2-4 classes during that time and then choose your favorites.

Before Your First Class:

  1. Arrive a few minutes early to get set up and settle in.

  2. Check out the free core and breathing video I email before class – You will feel SO much better in your practice.

  3. Remember: "The hardest part of class is getting TO class." You're already winning just by showing up!

During Class:

  • Listen to your body – it's smarter than you think!

  • Form is your friend – ask questions, I am always happy to answer

  • Be kind to yourself – that is part of the practice in my classes

Success Stories to Inspire You:

  • My 85-year-old student improved his balance in just 6 weeks

  • Pre-natal questions welcome: One student credits my Pilates classes for an easier twin pregnancy and recovery than her first child!

Remember: Everyone in the room started exactly where you are.
I've been in fitness since 1986. I've seen it all (and have worn all the questionable fitness fashion) and I'm here to help you feel great.

Final Thoughts: Fitness isn't just about getting stronger or more flexible (though that's awesome too). It's about celebrating what your body can do, connecting with amazing people, and having fun along the way. So take a deep breath, smile, and I look forward to meeting you.
